Abstract:
A multi-sensor survey was conducted in 1991 along the
Endeauvour Segment. These data contain point files that
include information related to navigation, vehicle
attitude, the environment, and vehicle status. The
processed point data was converted into ArcInfo format and
cleaned of fliers. Line coverages were constructed from the
point files.
Purpose:
These data were created to aid in the desription and
discovery of the workings of the hydrothermal vent system
found on the Endeavour Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge.

coverage depends primarily on the accuracy of the
navigation employed during data collection. These data were
originally collected using an accoustic transponder network
registered to GPS with Selective Availability (SA) on, and therefore

Navigational data were analyzed for erroneous fixes, i.e.
points that were obvious outliers were removed.

These data were logged by the DSRV Alvin using an in-hull
navigation system. This system uses the travel time of
accoustic energy from the submersible to the transponders
and back to the submersible (rather than
submersible-transponder-ship). The accuracy is
+/- 1.0 meters.

Vertical control was provided by the pressure sensor and
altimeter readings on the submersible. The vertical
accuracy is +/- 0.5 meters.

Process_Description:
1. The submersible was navigated with a long-baseline
transponder net. The sub's position was monitored by
surface controllers and by the pilot and scientists in the
sphere with the in-sub program.
2. Positions were reported in ALVIN X/Y (meters)
coordinates based on a grid which has its origin at 47.8939
degrees latitude and -129.16451667 degrees longitude (to
the south and west of the transponders and dive region for each
transponder net).
3. ALVIN positions were then converted into Lat/Long
measurements with the program
"xy2ll.kf"(\\bromide.ocean.washington.edu\usr\local\bin).
4. Data were then entered into GIS.
