The National Science Foundation continues to support the
development of the RIDGE (Ridge Inter-Disciplinary
Global Experiments) Initiative and invites proposals
directed toward the program elements
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Over the coming years, RIDGE will initiate a
comprehensive long-term program on the Juan de Fuca
Ridge designed to conduct in-depth inquiries into the
issues of how and why temporal change occurs along
major sections of the global spreading center network.
This document provides a framework for the first five years
of a major, focused effort to examine change and
covariation among the physical, chemical and biological
components of a modern ridge crest environment. It also
lays out the research motivation, site selection rationale,
examples of potential experiments, infrastructure, and
seagoing capabilities needed to conduct an ensemble of
coordinated projects designed to explore the time domain
in a well-studied, readily accessible portion of mid-ocean
ridge crest. In broad terms, it lays out priorities in the form
of phasing among key elements of the program.

- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
These data describe the location and extent of sulfide
structures on the Main Endeavour Field. A detailed,
high resolution geologic map was prepared from these
coverages and can be found in the article cited. The
coverages represent the geological boundaries
established using Alvin video records in combination with
high resolution, in-hull Alvin navigation from 1988 and 1991
dive series.
- Purpose:
-
These data were created to aid in the description and
discovery of the workings of the hydrothermal system
found on the Endeavour Segment of the Juan de Fuca
Ridge.

The locational information in this data set is related to the
positional accuracy. The identification of the objects in the
data set was interpreted from still, video and SONAR

These data were logged by the DSRV Alvin using
an in-hull navigation system. The system uses the
travel time of acoustic energy from the submersible
to the transponders and back to the submersible
(rather than submersible-transponder-ship).
The accuracy was measured at +/- 1.5 meters.

Vertical control was provided by the pressure
sensor and altimeter readings on the submersible.

These data were interpreted by the investigators using
Submersible observations, video records, high precision
in-hull navigation and side-scan SONAR. The imagery

Most data collected at the vent field scale in the
Endeavour area have been referenced to the UW local
ALVIN grid. As navigational precision (through use of
"in-hull" data) and accuracy (by referencing to p-code
GPS) has improved, there have been problems with
registration of features within the vent field. All data
collected here have been converted to UTM Zone 9 using
the best location for the origin of the UW local ALVIN grid
as 47 53.634N 129 09.871W.
