Dive 2923
Port Observer Narrative

Port Observer: Robigou

8:21 In water, permission to dive
8:24 6615, 6698
8:31 Sub can't hear Xponedr at 14.5 kHz frequency
8:32 Manifold computer is missing power cord. Can be run on batteries but not continuously
8:43 6594.5, 6599.4
8:52 Depth 1000 m, landing target is 6540, 6580
9:02 6558, 6594
9:13 6527, 6595
9:24 6481, 6565
9:27 bottom can be seen in Mesotech at 20 m
9:28 on bottom at 6492, 6534 Hdg288 D2097
9:36 moving
9:43 problem with the sub. Still too heavy by 50 lbs
9:45 Still can not hear Xponder at 14.5 so change in plan, we won't go to Xpnder A to ping
on other transponders heading directly for hulk at 5050, 6250
9:47 heading toward the valley at Hdg 257
~10:00 complete record from audio tape Encountered dead sulfide structures may be even a
field on eastern wall. 6162, 6450
11:49 for comments on this part listen to audio tape, we went down to the valley which has a
very pillowy coverage in this area and is very narrow, probably no more than 2000 m wide and
we headed up the western wall thinking we were still away from hulk using the coordinates we
have. It turns out that there is a problem with navigation and we are off quite a lot, about 600-
625m North and 150 to 200m west of where we should be.

So we are now back on the valley floor after having travelled up the western wall to 2100 m
depth, and come back down

11:50 4949, 7064
12:06 Still probably north of where we should be 5370, 6165
encounter with a tall dead sulfide structure about 7-8 m high
12:17 D2190 5348, 6150 Another very large dead sulfide structure 10 m high several
meters wide and complicated with remnants of flanges and horizontal scars.
12:20 On the way passed a couple of smaller dead sulfide structures 5333, 6141
12:32 5226,5865 D2190
12:40 We are not lost anymore we are at the northern end of the MEF and I spotted the
LOBO marker with the cement bag
5152, 5702
5153, 5703
5151, 5702
12:45 At cement bag still getting some good fixes to clean up navigation with good old
markers
12:47- 12:49 HULK On port side marker J on the northern end of Hulk. For some reason,
brown biology the structures looks less active in terms of black smoker activity on top but after
talking to John Baross the brown aspect of the tubeworm actually mean very active diffuse flow
and probbaly more mature tubeworn field on the structure. The brown comes from the methane
oxidizing bacterial mat that are covering up the tubeworms. on the mat then the gastropods
migrate and feed on.
12:50 Marker J on port side
12:50:30 D2193 5190, 5638 D2191 Hdg 202 alt: 13m
2 small black smokers really nice and very active but small diameter orifices
they are located at 5190, 5626 and we are going to sample the smoker on the
left hand side (see videos)
13:04 Manifold sampling on Hulk
D2188 alt13M Hdg 291
5197, 5626

13:21 Temperature measurements 157, 302, 327, 331, 331, 332C
13:25 deployed marker A3 at 50 cm to the left of the orifoce of left hand side smoker.
13:31 Heading for DANTE Hdg 215 80m
13:37, 13:38 Paassing TP at 8m alt very nice smoking flange over flowing on the eastern side
of TP second peak (southern peak) Hdg 227
13:41 Arriving on Dante
13:41 Marker X on port side D2186 Hdg 135
13:42 Passing over X we are just above X I can see the marker below us on the port side.
No good fixes
13:43 D2179 Alt 16 m Hdg 142 No good fixes
13:45 large nice smoker D2178 Hdg 137 5124-5543 alt 15m
13:47 D2178 alt 15m 5120, 5545
Sampling the smoker above marker X on top of Dant (northern lobe of Dante)\13:48
Temperature measurements max 348C
13:50 major 10
13:55 major 4
13:58 GasT #5
14:01 GasT #2
14:04 GasT #6
14:06 Marker A7 deployed at D2178ALT 15M 5122, 5540
14:08 Running low on power. Pat decides to terminate dive
14:08 starting to ascent Niskin bottle red and green triggerred in smoke over Dante at 2178 and
2175 m
Niskin bottle blue triggered at 2168 (10m)
14:09 End of dive leaving bottom.
14:30
14:45
14:54 checking on transponder at 14.5 frequency and sub still can not hear it
