Dive 2933 Port Observer Marv Lilley

0820 We are in the water. The conductivity probe is working and readings are on scale.

0821 50m probe reads 3.83v, 17deg, window temp 4.3

0834 409m, probe T-9.1, window T 4.3

0841 694m, 3.62v, probe T 8.63, window-3.211

0850:04 982m, 3.1348v, T-7.550, window-3.302

0856:50 1164m, 3.1348v, 7.550, win-3.302

0906:25 1439m, 3.2061v, t-6.74, win-2.52

0915 1700m, 3.324v, T-6.74, win-2.188

0923 1968m, 3.2925v, T-5.930, win-1.949

0929 5m off bottom (2172) 3.210v, t-5.93, win-1.55, X-4750, Y-5887 We are on the west wall, I see the talus.

0936 X-4764, Y-5871, Starting a new file for probe data, 2933b, for the run to Salut.

0942:30 X-4822, Y-5869, lots of white floc in the water, depth 2174, alt 7m.

0944:45 We have Salut in sight. X-4829, Y-5868.

0953 We are at the Salut flange. Probe reads 2.844v, T-5.93

1000 The conductivity probe is in the flange. 1.3616v, 345.8 deg.

1009 Probe- 1.3617v, 352.7 deg, temp- 4.34, X-4860, Y-5865, hdg 267, depth 2195.

1013 Pulled the plug on the conductivity probe. Pat says no sampling..

1015 Currently taking video of the conductivity probe on the J-hook installed on Salut. Pat says the flange is collectable.

1021 Still taking video. Can see the Arrow marker in the background.

1027 Leaving Salut headed for Puffer. Again seeing lots of sulfide chunks lying on the flats.

1029 X-4863, Y-5920, depth 2191, alt 3, on the west wall, I see only talus, no sulfide in sight.

1031:47 Over sheet flow still going north to find Puffer.

1035 We are at Puffer getting ready to deploy the temp probe.

1047:30 X-4873, Y-5981, working on deploying the temp probe. Several Patisms have been emitted re where the temp probe should really go. depth 2194, alt 4.

1053:30 The temp probe has been successfully deployed. Pat says the probes are 4-6'' into the orifice

1057 X-4869, Y-5977, We are setting up to get the tubeworms happily hanging out on the smoker here at Puffer.

1101 X-4869, Y-5977, Taking video of the worms prior to plucking them off the structure.

1106 X-4870, Y-5977, depth 2192, alt 6, hdg 104, temp at worm heads-6 deg, at base- 22 deg.

1107 Worms are in the box.

1109 Pat also took a small piece of the sulfide near where the worms were attatched.

1111 Taking video of the spot from which the worms were plucked.

1114 X-4873, Y-6002, we are at the P marker looking for the infamous marker R.

1115:56 We see marker 1L which is on Peanut.

1119 X-4871, Y-6002, depth 2188, alt8, hdg 155, we are looking around Bastille to get our bearings.

1126 X-4874, Y-6002, we are trashing and thrashing on top of Bastille to see if we can reactivate some of the currently inactive smokers.

1130 We are setting up on the north side of Bastille to sample an active smoker. X- 4880, Y-6002, depth 2190, alt 2 (that alt refers to the height above the structure, we are several m off the deck), hdg 218.

1149 We have taken the two portside manifold majors and both manifold gas tights at this site on the north side of Bastille. Marker AD deployed. X-4879, Y-6002, hdg 216. The manifold temp probes appear not to have been working properly here (288-290 deg). I failed to get Pat to measure temp with the Alvin probe. This needs to be done on a subsequent dive.

1204 We are looking at the Bastille complex in order to sort out the actual locations of the various markers that have been deployed in the area. We decide that marker P is on the SE side of Bastille with new marker AM nearby. The marker we have just deployed (AD) is in the same smoker complex just north and a bit east of P. The other spires on Bastille which were actively venting in 1991 are now dead.

1205 We are at Needle and see marker B7 on top of the tallest spire. We set up on a smoker on the west side of Needle.

1210 Dropped the manifold wand, have to sit down and pick it up.

1256 Have finished taking the two starboard majors on the manifold. The manifold temp probe read 320 during the sampling but the Alvin probe reads 372. We have to check out the manifold probes tonight. We also take gas tight sampler #2 at this site. X-4890, Y-5993, depth 2185, hdg 279. We deploy marker AN at this sampling site.

1306 Pat has just picked up the sulfide chimney that he broke off prior to water sampling. Its in the biobox.

1319 We have set up on a different smoker on Needle west of AN but east of B7.

1345 We take major samplers blue #10, purple #4, and gas tight sample #5. Alvin temp probe-368 deg. We deploy marker AW. X-4891, Y-5999, depth 2179, hdg 179.

1350 Out of power, weights away.
