0914 1935m 4.9120 2.6140 .66 1.344 15.31

0920 2146m 4.9130 2.6310 -.15 1.341 14.81

0923 Bottom in sight, alt 7m, depth 2204, X-4952, Y-5847

0926 4.9130 2.6360 .120 1.339 14.44 We have neutral trim.

0927:44 Mostly sheet flow with a few pillows and a small (2m) pillar. X-4936, Y-5852. Now crossing a small fissure about 1m wide.

0928 Passing by old sulfide structures. X-4915, Y 5858

0929:50 Going up a pillow covered wall. Actually looks like an uplifted pillow ridge. X- 4891, Y-5858.

0930:24 Just crossed another fissure. X-4883, Y-5860 and now in lobate.

0931 We see the tubeworm field at Salut. X-4868, Y-5863, depth 2194, hdg 288

0933 Setting up to put RI j_hook into flange pool at Salut (A5).
4.913 2.636 .12 1.336 14.03

0934 Pat needs leg room. Ugh! Ow!

0935 Temp probe is warming up but only reads 180 deg. Pat gets 340.6 with Alvin probe. Our probe now reading 215.4, have to check it out.

0944 Still sitting and collecting data with the RI probe. After an initial rapid drop, the probe output is now drifting up.

1008 Pull the probe out of the pool.

1012 Put probe back into the pool.

1021 Pat is pulling the plug to disconnect the RI probe from the sub feedthrough.

1025:16 Just released the RI J-hook and sent it to the surface.

1027 Setting up to take water samples at the Salut A5 flange.

1048 Completed water sampling. We fired the two port side major samplers and the port gas tight. X-4888, Y-5867, depth 2194, hdg 217.

1050 We have picked up the conductivity J-hook and will carry it around with us the rest of the dive.

1106 While Pat was working to get the J-hook anchor line safely stowed, we drifted north and are already at Puffer.

1112 We have changed the video tapes and are setting up to recover the temp probe left earlier on Puffer.

1114 In the 3-chip video, a small puffer is visable below the main puff. Fascinating.

1116:30 The temp probe is aboard Alvin. X-4872, Y-5928, depth 2194, alt 4, hdg 163.

1117 Pat is tinkling. Pat wants to take a sample here to test out the new hydraulic ram he has installed on Jerry. Sounds good to me.

1125 We are checking Puffer's temp with the Alvin HT probe and it is jumping all over hell. The readings are varying between 360 and 376. We should look carefully at the data file.

1134 Pat has just used Jerry to take major #10 and gas tight yellow.

1139 We have been looking around Puffer to see if there are any workable flanges for J-hook deployments. Negative.

1140 We have moved over to Bastille to check for active flanges. We are in the P/AM area and see none that are active.

1142:44 Now looking over Peanut and see a small active flange but decide it will not work.
1149 Just got word from top lab that the J-hook is on board.

1154 We have traveled on a course of 120 from marker P and found a small structure that is basically a freestanding flange. (This structure was not on the 1991 maps and after this dive was named Cantilever). Three fixes were received at this site:
X Y
4877 5987
4876 5990
4880 5988
depth 2194, hdg 153

1156 Pool depths ranged from 3-5 steps on the flange saw. (6-10 cm) The structure is abour 3 m tall and is a cantilevered flaange. We leave marker AS. Max temp in the pool was 354 with 352 being the most common. Cantilever is 10-15 m south of marker P and is a bit east of AE.

1212 We are continuing to look for a second flange and are now looking at Needle. Pat says the AW marker we left on 2933 has fallen down and is a few m below the site we sampled.

1217 We are on the north side of Needle coming around to the east. X-4897, Y-5998, depth 2180, alt 12. No useful flanges on Needle.

1220 We are now looking at Tara Marker Y is out front. We also give up on Tara and head for Dudley. I have seen flanges there on a previous dive.

1224 Crossing several small fractures. X-4913, Y6026 in pillow lavas.

1225 Crossing a big fault scarp. X-4931, Y-6486.

1225:50 Another scarp

1226:31 Maybe that was a big fissure. We seem to have crossed it and are now in a flat sheet flow, X-4964, Y-6086.

1227 I see sulfide.

1232 At Dudley looking at a possible flange. X-5000, Y-6127. North end of Dudley. The pool temp is 309 deg. X-4999, Y-6127, depth 2195, hdg 171. alt 5. The pool depth at the back of the pool is 5 saw teeth (10 cm) and 2 saw teeth at the front.

1244 We place marker B9 1m below and to the north of the flange. This site is about 5m north of the AA smoker on Dudley.

1255 We have taken gas tight purple and major red 12 at marker AA here at Dudley. X-5003, Y-6118, depth 2194, hdg 268. The temp was 268.

1300 Pat just put a pile of tubeworms fron near AA into the biobox.

1304 We arte headed for Grotto to try to grab a water sample. Pat says power is almost gone.

1306 Broken sheet flow on way to Grotto, X-4987, Y-6128, hdg 273, just crossing a small fissure. Pat says we are going by the place where in 1991 he rammed the big sulfide chimney that we brought home and now sits in the coffin on the patio.

1308 I see pvc marker 97, X-4954, Y-6135, depth 2194, it is just at the base of Grotto. We are at the marker BA site (APL generator) on Grotto. X-4947, Y-6142, hdg 291.

1323 At the BA site, we have taken the two starboard majors and the starboard gas tight on the manifold. Temp 346 (new temp probes on the manifold). X-4945, Y-6143, hdg 314.

1324 Pat put a piece of sulfide from the BA chimney into the biobox on top of the Dudley tubeworms.

1328 Pat tries to pick up the generator but it is stuck.

1331 Out of power, weights away.
